Choosing a Nanny
Finding a trustworthy and nurturing caregiver for your home can be a difficult task. As parents, we all want to find the perfect person who will not necessarily replace us, but who will come very close, allowing us the flexibility of being away from home for extended periods without too much worry. Entrusting the care of our little ones to an "outsider" becomes even more difficult for first time parents as they are often anxious about making mistakes and about getting it right the first time.
Developing trust is of utmost importance. Today, many parents choose nannies through an agency service or through referrals. It is always easier to do a second interview with someone who already comes highly recommended by a friend, neighbour or colleague. References are useful as nannies who had a good track record on previous jobs will likely continue to perform well. It is recommended however that each family develop its own checklist and list of criteria as this individual will not only be looking after your children but will also be working in the privacy of your home. Caring for your child at home, within his/her comfort zone is always the preferred option. No parent ever forgets the eyes welled up with tears on those first few days at pre-school.
Taking your child to a new environment often brings anxiety for both parent and child. When this is the only option, however, the Glebe Reggio Centre makes that decision easier as our licensed daycare facility provides a warm, sincere and loving home environment for children as young as 14 months old. The Centre also offers a parent/nanny drop-in facility which provides a social outing for visiting children and facilitates pre-enrollment integration.
